Hess Screen Test: Advanced Diagnosis for Strabismus and Diplopia of dieci decimi in Naples
What is the Hess Lancaster Test for?

The main purpose of this test is to identify any dysfunctions in the ocular muscles, such as hypofunctions (muscles that do not contract enough) or hyperfunctions (muscles that contract excessively). These problems can cause diplopia, difficulty focusing, or anomalies in ocular coordination.

How is the Hess Lancaster Test performed?

The patient wears a pair of glasses with colored lenses (one red and one green) and stands in front of a specially designed screen. The specialist projects a red light on various points of the screen, while the patient, using a flashlight with green light, must superimpose the light beam of his flashlight on that projected by the operator. This procedure allows obtaining a visual map that represents the condition of the ocular muscles, highlighting any dysfunctions. The test, which lasts about 30 minutes, is non-invasive and completely painless.

What is the Hess Lancaster Test for? This test is essential for diagnosing and monitoring various ocular conditions, including:

-Strabismus (deviation of the eyes);

-Paresis or paralysis of the ocular muscles (due to neurological problems);

-Diplopia (double vision);

-Ocular torsions (abnormal rotations of the eyes).

Furthermore, it is used in post-operative monitoring in patients who have undergone surgery to correct strabismus

and to examine the functionality of the cranial nerves involved in ocular movements (III, IV and VI cranial nerves).

When is the Hess Test indicated?

The Hess Lancaster test is indicated in all cases of strabismus of paralytic origin, in the presence of diplopia or when lesions to the cranial nerves are suspected. Furthermore, it is used in the post-operative follow-up to monitor the evolution of the treated condition, allowing to verify the effectiveness of the corrective surgery for strabismus.
